Board of Directors seeking Parent Member for 2018/19 – 2019/20 Term

YRCS Board of Directors Parent Member Solicitation

Dear YRCS Parents,

The YRCS Board of Directors is seeking an applicant from the parent body, to fill the one Parent Representative BOD seat that will be opening for the 2018-2019 school year. Parent Representatives are meant to provide the perspective of the parent body on issues that come before the Board of Directors.  They serve a two year term, and are elected by the parent body.   Parent Representatives play an important role in the healthy functioning of YRCS.   If you are interested in this position, and feel that you can contribute to YRCS in the following ways (see next page), please submit your letter by 5:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 25th, 2018.  The new parent members’ term begins July 1st, 2018. Any potential members are invited to attend all the meetings from now until June. There will be an orientation that members are required to attend, in June or August.  Date of Orientation TBD.  Parent Representatives serve a two-year term and are welcome to run for consecutive terms.

Interested parents need to submit a letter to the community (maximum of one page), containing the following information:

  • How long have you been at YRCS? (Parent reps must have a minimum of two complete years at the school)
  • What is or are the grade level(s) of your child (ren)?
  • Why are you interested in serving on the board?
  • What skills and abilities can you bring to the board?

 

Letters may contain any other biographical details that you feel might be of interest to the community. The letters will be made available to the parent body, via the newsletter and a posting in the front of the school, so parents can make an informed choice.

Letters of interest are due no later than 5:00 pm on Wednesday, April 25th, 2018. All letters will be included in the May 4th newsletter and copies of letters will be hung in the showcase by the school store. The voting will be open May 7th-11th.

There will be ballots and a voting box located in the front office, during office hours, from May 7th-11th, 2018. Families need to come in to cast a vote in person.  Parent Council will have 2 or more representatives counting votes Friday, May 11th at 3:30pm.

Results will be announced by email and posted in the next newsletter.

The Yuba River Charter School Board of Directors, What is it?

The Board of Directors is comprised of nine voting members; three parent representatives, three faculty representatives, up to three community members, and two non-voting members; the School Director and the Business Manager.

Some of the duties entrusted to the Board of Directors are:

  • Overseeing that the school’s program and operation are faithful to the terms of its charter, bylaws, policies, and its mission and vision statement.
  • Adopting policies that further clarify and assist in maintaining the YRCS Mission and Educational Program.
  • Ensuring that the school’s academic programs are successful. All YRCS academic   programs are evaluated and reviewed annually by the Board. Evaluations are used to    determine the effectiveness of the programs and provide direction for improvements.
  • Ensuring that the school is financially solvent by planning and budgeting to meet the school’s goals.
  • Hiring the School Director and evaluating his/her performance yearly.
  • Approving the hiring and termination of staff.
  • Evaluating the school’s effectiveness by monitoring staff, parent, and student perspectives.
  • Creating, serving on, and appointing people to necessary committees.
  • Developing strategic planning and approving short and long term goals.
  • Providing board orientation to all members, which includes introduction to the school and curriculum, classroom visits, and a binder of policies and information.

        

The Board of Directors has one scheduled monthly meeting, and additional special meetings are added when necessary. BOD members are expected to attend all meetings.  Board members are also required to read all documents related to the meeting and its agenda before meetings occur. All Parent Representative BOD members are also required to participate in the Director Evaluation.
