Our community has gathered and walked the land, with a tour of the water runoff plan and announcement of the grant monies, an opportunity that will allow us to incorporate into our plans a community and watershed benefit that we are excited to see come to fruition!
The most recent caretakes of this land before us had built a simple retention basin in order to slow the effects of floodwaters for downstream neighbors.
As this area is mainly lava cap upstream, waters tend to flow instead of soak into the hillside. We hope to greatly increase the size of this retention basin, and engineer it so that it may slowly release the waters as the rains flow, allowing for the basin itself to be able to catch more rains, instead of reaching a point of overflow.
