Spanish & Electives
Now in her fourth year at YRCS, Señora Thomsen brings a world of experience—literally—to her role as Spanish teacher. With a B.A. in Latin American Studies/Spanish and an M.Ed. in TESOL, she has spent much of her life immersed in different languages and cultures. Having lived in Mexico and Ecuador and taught in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Taiwan, she offers students a rich, global perspective on language learning. Her path to teaching began unexpectedly—while traveling through Europe, she needed money and started teaching English. That temporary job soon turned into a lifelong passion. As a former Waldorf student herself, she now feels right at home at YRCS, where she appreciates the school’s dedication to fostering a love of lifelong learning.
For Señora Thomsen, the best part of her job is the daily interactions with students—helping them connect with language in a meaningful and joyful way. She brings energy, curiosity, and a love of exploration to her classes, inspiring students to embrace Spanish not just as a subject but as a gateway to new cultures and perspectives.
Originally from Southern California, she enjoys hiking, camping, and being outdoors. She also has a passion for strategic board games and robotics. A fun fact? She and Farmer Uta run Sweet Earth Worm Farm, a business specializing in worm castings for soil enrichment! She lives by the words of Robert A. Heinlein: “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.” Señora Thomsen is thrilled to be part of the YRCS community and looks forward to continuing to inspire students with language, culture, and a sense of adventure.
