Ms. Shawna is in her second year at YRCS, serving as an Education/Resource Specialist in the Learning Center. With a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in Special Education, and an Education Specialist Teaching Credential, she brings both expertise and heartfelt dedication to supporting students with unique learning needs. Her journey into special education was deeply personal—while she had always loved working with children, it was her own daughter’s experience in special education that inspired her to pursue a career helping other students like her. She is passionate about providing individualized support and helping students discover their academic potential while guiding them along the journey to achieve it.

What she loves most about YRCS is the community—the supportive staff, engaged parents, and the warm, welcoming environment make every day meaningful. She values the connections she builds with her students, taking the time to learn about their interests both in and out of school to better support their growth. Her favorite part of the day is right before school starts, when students arrive and play outside, full of excitement and energy for the day ahead. She enjoys walking around campus, soaking in the joy and enthusiasm of the students.

Originally from Novato in the North Bay, Ms. Shawna enjoys spending time with her family (including her many beloved pets), reading, writing, watching movies, doing puzzles, and riding her bike. A fun fact? She has dogs, a cat, a bird, and a reptile—and loves them all equally! She lives by the simple but powerful motto, “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.” If she could have lunch with anyone, it would be Michelle Moran, one of her favorite historical fiction authors. She admires Moran’s ability to travel the world for research and would love to hear about her experiences and creative process—especially since she shares a love for history, travel, and writing. Ms. Shawna is grateful to be part of the YRCS family and looks forward to continuing to support and empower her students every day.
